If you have the standard Hayward AquaRite controller, the replacement decision starts with the software revision shown on the control box, not the size of the cell in a product photo. Hayward’s residential compatibility chart says T-CELL-3, T-CELL-5 and T-CELL-9 require AquaRite revision 1.50 or later. It lists T-CELL-15 for all AquaRite revisions. Then check the model printed on your installed cell and the pool’s actual gallons. A compatible controller setting does not prove that the cell is the right size or that the old cell has failed.
This is a researched replacement guide, not a hands-on cell test. The matrix below transcribes only the AquaRite column of Hayward’s chart. It does not extend that column to AquaRite Pro, AquaRite+, AquaRite S3, AquaRite 900, AquaTrol, or any other named controller.
Keep physical identity and programmed identity in separate fields
A useful replacement enquiry contains three independently read identifiers: the complete controller name, its software revision, and the model printed on the physical cell. Add the configured cell type as a fourth field. Do not copy the programmed value into the physical-model field; a default or mistaken setting is exactly what this check is intended to reveal.
Classify the result before shopping:
- All identities agree: continue the manual’s diagnosis of salt, flow and cell condition before deciding replacement is needed.
- Cell label and setting disagree: resolve the configuration under the correct manual, then reassess the symptoms.
- Controller family or physical cell is unknown: obtain identification from Hayward or a qualified technician before choosing a SKU.
- Proposed replacement changes cell size: confirm compatibility, demand and the required setting as a new configuration decision.
Save the record and the purchase receipt after a legitimate replacement. It prevents a future owner from treating a display setting or a similar-looking housing as proof of the installed model. This record does not require opening an electrical enclosure or bypassing a flow warning.
Standard AquaRite compatibility and size map
| Cell type on Hayward chart | Residential pool size rating | Standard AquaRite software revision | Matching display setting | Decision before checkout |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| T-CELL-3 | Up to 15,000 US gallons | 1.50 or later | t-3 |
Check the controller revision and the installed label. |
| T-CELL-5 | Up to 18,000 US gallons in this compatibility chart | 1.50 or later | t-5 |
Confirm the exact cell SKU and its current manual; similarly named current listings use a different gallon rating. |
| T-CELL-9 | Up to 25,000 US gallons | 1.50 or later | t-9 |
Check the controller revision and the installed label. |
| T-CELL-15 | Up to 40,000 US gallons | All revisions | t-15 |
Check the installed label and whether 40,000 gallons covers your pool. |
The revision and ratings in this table come from Hayward’s AquaRite troubleshooting guide, page 40 . “Up to” is a manufacturer’s size rating, not a measured output guarantee for your pool. Hayward’s April 2026 SKU schedule identifies W3T-CELL-3 as T-CELL-3, W3T-CELL-9 as T-CELL-9, and W3T-CELL-15 as T-CELL-15. Its W3GLX-CELL-5 row says 20,000 gallons, whereas the older compatibility chart’s T-CELL-5 row says 18,000 gallons. That is a reason to check the exact GLX-CELL-5 product documentation before choosing one, not to silently substitute the newer rating into the older chart.
Four checks before ordering
- Read the controller name. Use this matrix only if the box is the standard AquaRite covered by Hayward’s residential guide. “AquaRite” within a longer model name is not enough. The AquaRite Pro owner manual , for example, has its own Settings Menu and lists four cell choices. Its illustrated main software revision is 1.10, but that does not make the standard AquaRite 1.50 rule a Pro requirement. Get the manual for the exact control model instead.
- Read the standard AquaRite software revision. On the controller’s Diagnostic display, successive presses reach
r1.xxat the seventh diagnostic item. The next item shows the configured cell type. These are the display positions in Hayward’s AquaRite Rev G owner manual , not instructions for other control panels. If the revision cannot be read, resolve that before ordering a T-CELL-3, -5 or -9. - Read the physical cell label and confirm pool gallons. Hayward places the cell model on the wraparound body label. Compare that label with the controller setting and the model on the seller’s listing. Confirm the pool’s water volume rather than relying on a house listing or a rounded estimate. An existing
t-15display can merely be the factory default, so it is not proof that a T-CELL-15 is installed. - Check that replacement is warranted. A “Check Salt” or “Inspect Cell” light alone does not establish cell failure. Hayward’s troubleshooting sequence calls for an independent salt test, cell inspection and correct cell programming before replacement. If the display has the wrong cell setting, fix the setting and reassess according to the manual. Keep electrical panel work for a qualified technician.
If a replacement is justified, Hayward’s Rev G manual says to select the matching t-3, t-5, t-9 or t-15 setting before operation. The wrong selection can make the salt reading inaccurate; the troubleshooting guide says it may suspend chlorination. Follow the manual’s installation, average-salt reset and water-testing steps after fitting a new cell. The pool still needs a tested free-chlorine residual.
Which one should you buy?
For an older standard AquaRite below revision 1.50, the chart’s direct compatibility path among these four cell types is T-CELL-15, rated for pools up to 40,000 gallons. If that is not the installed cell or the purchase represents a change in size, confirm the full system configuration and plumbing with Hayward or a qualified pool professional first. Do not order a smaller cell because its gallon rating looks sufficient when the controller revision cannot select it.
For a standard AquaRite at revision 1.50 or later, choose a cell that covers the verified pool volume and matches the model you intend to configure. Hayward’s troubleshooting guide advises using the same model when replacing a failed cell. A change from the installed size deserves a fresh check of pool demand, controller setting and the exact model manual. The W3T-CELL-15 Amazon listing
was verified as a Hayward TurboCell W3T-CELL-15, 40,000-gallon listing during this research. Hayward’s 2026 schedule identifies that SKU as T-CELL-15. Check the listing again before purchase; Amazon may show UK shipping or availability information even for a US amazon.com link.
For T-CELL-3 and T-CELL-9, use only the labelled W3T-CELL-3 search or W3T-CELL-9 search after your revision and size checks. Those are searches, not verified individual product listings. Do not infer the exact model from a search thumbnail. We do not recommend a T-CELL-5 destination here because the older 18,000-gallon chart and current W3GLX-CELL-5 20,000-gallon SKU record need model-specific reconciliation at checkout.
If you are considering a portable digital salt tester as the independent check, our LaMotte 1749 review separates salt mode, calibration and conflicting precision claims. A tester reading alone does not diagnose a failed AquaRite cell.
When to wait instead of buying a cell
Wait if the controller model or revision is unknown, the cell’s body label is unreadable, the programmed cell type disagrees with the physical cell, or the pool volume is unverified. Also wait if the only symptom is a salt or cell light and independent testing and inspection have not ruled out a setting or water issue. A new cell will not repair a no-flow condition or replace a pool chemistry diagnosis. For broader system trade-offs, read our saltwater generator versus tablet feeder guide .
If a separate external circulation timer has been professionally diagnosed as needing replacement, identify that component independently of the AquaRite cell. Our Intermatic T104 replacement-package guide separates clock supply, mechanism, enclosure and heater-protection checks. It does not establish which timer, if any, belongs in your AquaRite installation.
Research method and limits
We compared Hayward’s standard AquaRite compatibility chart with its Rev G owner manual, checked the separate Pro manual to keep model rules apart, and reconciled current W3 replacement SKUs against Hayward’s April 2026 schedule. Sources were reviewed on September 23, 2026. The compatibility guide carries a 2017 copyright, so its software matrix is historical manufacturer guidance for the named standard controller, while the newer manual and 2026 SKU schedule inform the display procedure and current replacement names. We did not test a controller, cell, pool, seller inventory or chlorine output. AquaRite+ and other named controller families need their own current manuals. Confirm the latest manual for the exact equipment before installation.
